Born circa 1520-1524 in Albino, near Bergamo, Moroni worked primarily in those two cities, training in Brescia with painter Moretto da Brescia, born cicra 1492-1495. The influence of the Renaissance on portraiture endured for centuries, as artists continued to emulate. It goes without saying therefore, that most portraits during this time were of members of the Holy Family, Martyrs or Apostles. While lesser known outside of his native Italy than da Vinci, the Carracci, and Caravaggio, Moroni is a key master in the Northern Italian tradition of naturalistic painting.Indeed the Vatican almost went bankrupt during the 16th century as successive Popes spent fortunes decorating Rome. A pioneer in portraiture, Moroni would outfit a mannequin with a sitter’s clothes, or use an assistant to model a sitter’s hands in order to convey reality.
